I need to know my meter ID, where to find my electric and/or gas meter?

Most electric meters are attached to external walls of the house. Houses usually have them installed near the front door, or the side of the house. If you live in an apartment, unit, or townhouse, you can usually find it grouped with the meters of other residents in one central location.

Here are some pictures of the different Australian electricity meters for reference.

If you live in NSW, the gas meter could be located under the kitchen sink, so check there first. If not, your gas meter is usually located directly next to your house, mostly on the front left or right of your house. If you live in a unit, apartment or townhouse, all of the meters for each residence will likely be in a central location. Common locations for gas meters in multi-dwelling buildings are basements and car parks.

In case you can’t find it in the said locations, you may contact your landlord, building manager, or realty property owner.

There are two main types of energy meters: basic meters and smart meters. While both measures how much energy you use, only the smart meter sends all its data back to CovaU automatically. How do I get a smart meter?

Older basic meters are gradually being phased out. That means that any newly-built property will be required to have a smart meter. Same goes for meter replacements. If an old basic meter needs replacing, it must be replaced with a smart meter. You can also request to switch to a smart meter if you’d like to move faster. We will arrange the installation with your distributor or an accredited metering provider. Just fill up this smart meter request form so we can start with your upgrade.

Are smart meters safe to use?

All consumer electronics in Australia are required to comply with Australian Standards, and smart meters are no different. Smart meters have the same electromagnetic exposure limit requirements as many other familiar household products such as phones and baby monitors. Is there any power interruption during the smart meter installation, and if so, for how long?

When a new meter is being installed, your power supply will be interrupted. Our meter providers will minimise the disruption caused and we will always provide you with at least 4 days’ notice of a planned interruption for meter installation. On average the downtime is only 30 mins.
