- What size battery do I actually need?
You don’t need to already have solar, but you will need a solar + battery system to join the VPP. If you don’t have them yet, our calculator will recommend the ideal system size for your home. - What size battery do I actually need?
Your battery size depends on your home: rooms, solar size, electricity bill, and pool usage.
Our calculator compares all these factors and recommends an approximate size, rounding up if there’s a conflict (e.g., 25–30 kWh → we show 30 kWh). - I’m not sure about my solar size. Can I still use the calculator?
Yes. Choosing “Not sure” still gives you a safe, accurate recommendation using typical usage patterns and your other answers.

4. How does my solar system size affect the recommended battery?
If you already have solar, it becomes the main factor in recommending battery capacity.
Example:
- 3–6 kW solar → 20 kWh battery
- 7–9 kW solar → 25 kWh battery
- 10–13 kW → 30 kWh battery
- 13 kW+ → 40–50 kWh
If unsure, we recommend 30 kWh as a balanced option.
5. How does my number of rooms affect my recommendation?
More rooms usually mean higher usage.
- 2–3 rooms → ~20 kWh
- 4–5 rooms → ~25–30 kWh
- 5+ rooms → ~40 kWh
If you’re unsure, we recommend 30 kWh.
6. How does my monthly electricity bill affect my battery size?
Higher bills often mean higher consumption.
- $100–$200 → ~20 kWh
- $200–$300 → ~25–30 kWh
- $300+ → ~40 kWh
Unsure? → 30 kWh recommended.
7. I have a swimming pool. Does that change my battery needs?
Yes. Pools use a lot of power.
With pool → 30–40 kWh recommended
Without pool → ~20 kWh
If you’re unsure, we show a safe range of 20–30 kWh.
8. Which recommendation do you show if my answers give different sizes?We always show the larger recommended size to ensure your system can handle actual usage. This avoids under-sizing your battery.
9. How much can I save by joining the VPP?Savings vary per home but usually come from:
- Using stored energy during peak rates
- Selling excess power during VPP events
- Less reliance on the grid

10. What brands of batteries can I choose from?We recommend trusted brands commonly supported by accredited installers in NSW & VIC. The calculator will show compatible options for your home.
11. Is the VPP available in my area?
The CovaU VPP program is available only in New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (VIC).
Homes outside these areas cannot receive system recommendations or installer matches.
12. What happens if I’m outside NSW/VIC? You can still explore the page, but the calculator and installer referrals are limited to NSW/VIC only. We’ll notify you if your address is not eligible.
13. Will joining the VPP affect how I use electricity at home? No. Your home’s usage always comes first.
The VPP only uses extra stored energy you don’t need at that moment.
14. Can I leave the VPP if I change my mind?Yes. The program is flexible, and you can request changes or cancellation anytime.
15. What happens after I submit my details? A qualified installer partner will review your results, confirm your system size, and reach out with recommendations, pricing, and next steps.
